BIO

Mike Miles was born in the Panama Canal Zone in 1956. While his father served in the U.S. Army as a non-commissioned officer, Miles grew up across Fort Leavenworth, Colorado Springs, Fort Carson, Schofield Barracks, and Hawaii as one of eight children. Miles reflects upon his childhood under the care of his stay-at-home mother and the influence of formative experiences in the education system. He earned his degrees from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, the University of California at Berkeley, and Columbia University. Prior to assuming his current position as the Superintendent of Schools for Houston ISD, Miles’ expansive career includes his own service in the Army, diplomacy for the U.S. State Department and Bureau of Intelligence and Research, and extensive work in education. Miles currently lives in Houston with his wife. In this interview, Superintendent Miles shares about his early life and schooling, time at West Point, and approach to the role of an educator. Miles also discusses his routine as the HISD Superintendent and current family life.
