Dr. Steven Shen was born in the Hubei province of China in 1964, as the eldest of three children. He fondly recalls childhood memories of his family’s values and his schooling in the mountainous region of central China. Dr. Shen earned his education from a number of esteemed institutions, from Tongji Medical School to the Chinese Academy of Preventive Medicine in Beijing, before moving to the United States in 1988 for his PhD at the University of Texas Medical School in Houston.
Subsequently, Dr. Shen was a postdoctoral fellow at the National Institutes of Health and completed his residency at Pennsylvania State University. Since 2002, Dr. Shen has worked as a pathologist at Houston Methodist Hospital, specializing in genitourinary pathology. In addition to managing patient care diagnosis and research, Dr. Shen also serves as an assistant professor at Cornell Medical College through Methodist’s association with this institution. Currently, he lives in Houston with his wife, who is a doctor and researcher. They have two children. In his spare time, Dr. Shen enjoys watching sports and playing the erhu. He aims to continue teaching residents and fellows in his career, as well as giving more presentations and talks to those pursuing medicine.
In this interview, Dr. Shen shares about his childhood and education in China, his educational journey and time in medical school, and his establishment of a successful medical career and his own family in America. Dr. Shen also speaks on his current practice, reflections on the Asian American community amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, and hopes for the future.
