Chinese American filmmaker and news reporter Rick Quan was born in Houston, Texas. Growing up in the 1960s, Mr. Quan’s childhood memories include his relationships with his four siblings, his father’s grocery store, and his journey to success as the first Chinese American male weekday anchor in the Bay Area, as well as a renowned documentarian whose work focuses on the lives of Asian Americans. He now resides in Oahu, Hawaii, where he works as a news anchor for KITV Hawaii. This interview covers his experiences as a 2nd Generation Chinese American, especially during the 1950s and 1960s, as well as his career journey. Mr. Quan also discusses his work as a documentarian, digging deep into some of the people he’s researched over the years, and at the close of the interview, also gives advice to any aspiring journalists, news anchors, or sports reporters.
