Nabila Mansoor was born in Toronto, Canada in 1976 as the daughter of two Pakistani immigrants with 2 sisters and a younger brother. Despite attending an Islamic school, she found more of a connection with her faith in after coming to Houston and connecting with Houston’s Muslim community. For the last several years, Mansoor has been working to improve political awareness in underrepresented communities in Houston. She is currently the Executive Director of Rise AAPI, a civic engagement organization committed to uniting, organizing, and supporting the progressive AAPI (Asian American Pacific Islander) community in Texas. Nabila is also the President of Asian American Democrats of Texas. Currently, Nabila sits on the Fort Bend County LID 17 Board. Nabila also was past Executive Director of Emgage’s Texas chapter and led ECI’s (Empowering Communities Initiative) 2020 Census initiative to ensure a full count of Houston’s AAPI population. Nabila has spent much of her professional and personal life in activating citizenship across differing groups of people. She has a background in community organizing, leadership development and strategic planning. She holds a law degree from University of Houston Law Center. In this interview, Mansoor discusses her childhood, as well as her family and heritage. She explains how cultural influences since her early years until now have shaped her identity and career. Mansoor explains her progress and contributions to the Houston community through programs like EMGAGE, which work to educate and assist local communities in the voting process.
