BIO
Loc Huynh was born in 1992 in Austin, Texas, where he spent his early childhood before moving to the suburb of Leander. He recalls his Vietnamese American household as a “strange approximation of…the American upbringing,” consisting of fond memories with his family. He drew throughout his childhood, with creative influences evolving from children’s cartoons and trading cards of the nineties and noughties. Mr. Huynh earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Texas State University and Master of Fine Arts from the University of North Texas and now works as a full-time artist based in Houston. His work has been featured in the Museum of the Southwest, Rush & Co., the Academy of Fine Arts, and Meow Wolf. He has held residencies at the Vermont Studio Center and the Lawndale Center. In this interview, Mr. Huynh discusses his childhood and education, building his career as a full-time artist, and finding a new home in Houston and its Vietnamese and Asian American communities. He details his journey from his first exhibitions in the Dallas-Fort Worth area during university and previews upcoming projects, which display his reverence for the graphic style and sensibilities of the media he consumed in his childhood. Finally, he shares his love for cooking, fishing, and collecting and looks ahead to residency.
