BIO

Janas Caruncho is a Filipino American born to a pharmacist mother and a military officer father. Currently a senior pastor at Redeemer Presbyterian Church in Sugar Land, he moved to Texas immediately after Hurricane Harvey; growing up, he recalls religion being an incredibly impactful part of his life. This interview largely covers his values as an Asian American, a Christian pastor, and a father. He discusses the importance of honoring various traditions along with his wife, who is Chinese, and the concept of being able to recognize that there may be more problematic areas of some traditions without disavowing the whole tradition as a whole. He especially talks about the importance of trust, honesty, and transparency in living a fulfilling life that holds meaning in his relationship with his religion. Additionally, he covers his identity as an Asian American and how it influenced his early experiences as a child in America. Mr. Caruncho discusses the evolution of AAPI perceptions in society over the years, as observed through his own children’s experiences. Specifically, he delves into his experiences with his parents’ approach to upbringing, his own approach to parenting, and the importance of a healthy balance between work and family. He concludes by discussing his hopes for the future.
