Hannah Lingen Cen was born in Tianjin, China, and came to the United States as an international student to study music. She studied for 8 years at the Manhattan School of Music in New York City, and came to Rice’s Shepherd School of Music to pursue her DMA (Doctor of Musical Arts) in organ performance. She performs regularly as a church musician and has been a teaching fellow at Shepherd in the past.
In this interview, Hannah tells the story of her early life and path to becoming a musician, and remembers the people who have helped to shape her education and career. She talks about transitioning from piano to organ and how she can see this as a trend in other Asian American pianists. Hannah shares her passion for church performance, and how being part of the church community is an important aspect of her life.
