BIO

Eugene Wu was born in Guangzhou, Guangdong Province, China in 1978. Five years later, he moved to Odessa, Texas, alongside his mother and father. Not long afterward, the Wu family moved to Houston, where Mr. Wu attended various schools in the area. After earning his bachelor's degree from Texas A&M University, Mr. Wu attended the LBJ School for Public Affairs at the University of Texas at Austin, where he obtained his Master's Degree in Public Policy. Afterward, Mr. Wu earned his Law degree from the South Texas College of Law. In addition to being involved in a variety of community organizations, Mr. Wu currently serves as an attorney in Harris County and is a state representative for District 137. Mr. Wu was previously interviewed by the Houston Asian American Archive in June 2013 and in June 2020. In this special 2023 interview, Mr. Wu discusses his perspectives and thoughts on Senate Bill 147, his summary of the bill and its contribution to “yellow peril,” his own immigrant experience and how it contributes to his opposition of the bill, his observations on perceptions of foreign land purchases and national security, his solutions to fairly combat national security threats, the broader social consequences of the bill that extends beyond the Asian American population, his hope for coalitions across various minority groups in America, his emphasis on ending political complacency, his next plans to take regarding the issues in the bill, his thoughts on the future of the bill in the election of 2024, and his own experiences as a representative.
