Weiwei Zhong was born in Nantong, China as an only child to a family of doctors. She completed her schooling through college in China and immigrated to the United States in 1997 on a student visa. She attended the University of Georgia in Athens, Georgia, obtaining her Ph.D. in cell biology. She completed her post-doctorate in Pasadena, California at Caltech. She came to Houston in 2009 with a job offer from Rice University as an assistant professor and researcher with the Biochemistry and Cell Biology Department. She currently resides in Pearland with her husband from Mexico, their two-year-old daughter, and her parents.
